Asthma (COPD, BRONCHITIS)

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that affects the airways that carry air in and out of the lungs. It is characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. Sometimes Asthma patients experience Shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing. As per Ayurveda, Asthma is called Swasa Rog and is mainly caused by the Vata and Kapha doshas.

In Asthma, nose airways get narrow or swell and produce extra mucus. This makes breathing difficult and trigger coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. Asthma or “Dama” is a Problem in which Respiratory Airways/Track get narrow due to aggravation of Kapha, Dosha. This leads to Swelling and produces extra mucus.

Asthma signs and symptoms include:

  • Difficulty in breathing (Dyspnea)
  • Chest Pain
  • A whistling or wheezing sound when exhale

Asthma is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, and triggers can include allergens (such as pollen, dust mites, and animal dander), respiratory infections, exercise, air pollution, and certain medications. In North India esp around Delhi its caused by Dust on roads or construction or burning of stuble.

It can also be triggered by workplace environment like in case one works with chemical fumes, gases or dust

Asthma

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. Asthma symptoms can vary in severity and may be triggered by various factors. Here are key points about asthma:

  1. Inflammation and Airway Constriction:

    • Asthma involves inflammation of the airways, which makes them more sensitive to certain triggers.
    • When exposed to triggers like allergens or irritants, the airways can constrict, leading to difficulty breathing.
  2. Common Symptoms:

    • Wheezing: A whistling or hissing sound when breathing out.
    • Shortness of Breath: Difficulty breathing, especially during physical activities or in response to triggers.
    • Chest Tightness: A sensation of pressure or tightness in the chest.
    • Coughing: Often worse at night or early morning.
  3. Triggers:

    • Allergens: Substances like pollen, dust mites, mold, pet dander, and certain foods can trigger asthma symptoms in allergic individuals.
    • Irritants: Smoke, air pollution, strong odors, and fumes from chemicals can act as irritants.
    • Infections: Respiratory infections, such as colds or the flu, can exacerbate asthma symptoms.
    • Exercise: Physical activity, particularly in cold or dry air, can trigger symptoms in some individuals.
    • Stress: Emotional stress or excitement can contribute to asthma symptoms in some cases.

BRONCHITIS

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which are the air passages that carry air to the lungs. It can be acute or chronic, with acute bronchitis often resulting from viral or bacterial infections and chronic bronchitis typically associated with long-term irritation or exposure to harmful substances. Here are key points about bronchitis:

  1. Acute Bronchitis:

    • Causes: Acute bronchitis is commonly caused by viral infections, with the flu or common cold viruses being frequent culprits. Bacterial infections can also contribute, but they are less common.
    • Symptoms: Common symptoms include cough (often with mucus production), chest discomfort, fatigue, and sometimes a low-grade fever.
    • Duration: Acute bronchitis typically lasts for a few weeks, and symptoms gradually improve over time.
  2. Chronic Bronchitis:

    • Causes: Chronic bronchitis is often associated with long-term exposure to irritants, such as cigarette smoke, air pollution, or occupational dust and chemicals.
    • Symptoms: Chronic bronchitis is characterized by a persistent cough with mucus production for at least three months in two consecutive years. Other symptoms may include shortness of breath, wheezing, and chest tightness.
    • COPD: Chronic bronchitis is a common component of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a progressive lung condition that also includes emphysema.
  3. Symptoms:

    • Cough: A persistent cough is a hallmark symptom. It may produce clear, white, yellow, or greenish mucus.
    • Shortness of Breath: Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath may occur, especially during physical activity.
    • Chest Discomfort: Chest discomfort or a feeling of tightness may be present.
    • Fever: In acute bronchitis, a low-grade fever may be present, but it’s less common.
